CHILE: Trade On The Agenda In Boric Meeting With US Sec State Blinken

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Chilean President Gabriel Boric today as part of a five-day trip to the region where the Secretary is meeting with leftist leaders in an attempt to reassert US interests amid increased Chinese influence.

  • State Department: "Secretary Blinken and President Boric discussed the importance of further expanding the responsible flow of trade and investment, as we approach the 20th anniversary of the U.S.-Chile Free Trade Agreement."
  • China has overtaken the US as Chile's primary trading partner in recent years, making up 32% of Chile's trade compared to 17% of the US.
  • The meeting comes a month after Chileans overwhelming rejected a proposal to implement a new constitution on the grounds it was too liberal, dealing a significant blow to the Boric government.
