US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Chilean President Gabriel Boric today as part of a five-day trip to the region where the Secretary is meeting with leftist leaders in an attempt to reassert US interests amid increased Chinese influence.
- State Department: "Secretary Blinken and President Boric discussed the importance of further expanding the responsible flow of trade and investment, as we approach the 20th anniversary of the U.S.-Chile Free Trade Agreement."
- China has overtaken the US as Chile's primary trading partner in recent years, making up 32% of Chile's trade compared to 17% of the US.
- The meeting comes a month after Chileans overwhelming rejected a proposal to implement a new constitution on the grounds it was too liberal, dealing a significant blow to the Boric government.
