CHINA: China and South Korea have agreed to get their relationship back on track
after it was waylaid by China's objection to Seoul's deployment of the
U.S.-backed THAAD anti-missile defense system, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency
reported on Tuesday. "The two sides agreed to continue discussing the THAAD
issue, which the Chinese side is concerned about, through a channel of dialogue
between their militaries," the report said, quoting a South Korea government
statement. It also quoted South Korea's Foreign Affairs Ministry as saying the
two countries would "quickly normalize their exchanges and cooperation in all
areas." The relationship suffered a major hit after South Korea deployed the
THAAD system this year, saying it was needed to counter a threat from North
Korea. China launched an unofficial boycott of South Korean goods as a result,
with major South Korean retailers E-Mark and Lotte Mart being forced to pull out
of the mainland market because of the boycott. South Korea President Moon Jae-in
will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Vietnam next month at an APEC
meeting in an effort to resolve bilateral issues, the report added.
