China Foreign Min Talks On US Relations Ahead Of Xi Meeting w/Execs

(MNI) London - Wires carrying comments from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi following a meeting with an US executives. States that the "crux of China-US relations lies in the US' position of China as the most important strategic competitor and the most important geopolitical challenge." Wang says that "This has led to problems in bilateral relations...This has also led to the failure to translate the commitments made by US leaders into concrete actions."

  • Wang: "[The] situation is not in the interests of the people of the two countries, doe not meet expectations of the international community."
  • Wang: "The US should work with China in the same direction...enhance mutual understanding through face-to-face exchanges, and promote stabilisation, improvement and progress of bilateral relations."
  • The Chinese foreign minister's comments come a day after the US (as well as the UK) accused China of engaging in a cyberespionage campaign targeted at senior officials as well as imposing malware on key infrastructure, and in the UK exploiting large quantities of voter data. China has strongly refuted the allegations, calling them 'baseless'.
  • Notably, the group of executives are set to meetwith President Xi Jinping on 27 March after a late invite was offered to meet with a top Chinese leader.
