CHINA-German FM To Visit Beijing 13-15 Apr In Latest EU Diplomatic Trip

GERMANY

The Chinese foreign ministry has confirmed that German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock will travel to Beijing from 13-15 April for talks with her Chinese counterpart Qing Gang. The German minister's visit is the latest in a series of diplomatic trips to China by EU politicians, following on from the visits of Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez, French President Emmanuel Macron, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

  • Baerbock's visit will also be closely watched for the reception provided to her by the Chinese gov't. This will be the first ministerial visit since the German Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger visited Taiwan in March, which drew strong condemnation from Beijing, who slammed the minister for her "vile conduct."
  • Stark-Watzinger hails from the pro-business liberal Free Democrats (FDP), the smallest party in the tripartite federal coalition and the most hawkish on China. Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats (SPD) are viewed as the most dovish on China, while Baerbock's environmentalist Greens are seen as sitting between the FDP and SPD on the issue.
