China Imports Shift From Western Sources to Russia

Since the start of the year China has shifted their imports away from more expensive western sources to cheaper imports from Russia.

  • The discount in the price of Russian crude has driven an increase in crude oil imports from Russia from 8% (0.4mbpd) of total crude oil imports in 2011 to about 16% (1.6mbpd) in 2021.
  • China’s total crude oil imports decreased in recent months with June and July down to 8.8mbpd the lowest since July 2018. August recovered slightly to 9.5mbpd.
