China Reloaded a Record LNG Volume in Q1 2023

China re-exported a record high volume of 0.4m tons of LNG in Q1 2023 according to Bloomberg vessel tracking data. The LNG equated to 22% of the global total suggesting muted domestic gas demand and was second only to Spain with 0.54m tons. Approximately half of the re-exports were sent to South Korea but with supplies also to Japan, Thailand and Bangladesh.

  • China reloaded 0.56m tons of LNG in 2022 with most delivered when prices spiked higher between July and November.
  • China is forecast to import 33.6m tons of LNG this summer according to Bloomberg, above its contracted demand levels.
