China, Russia Walk Out During Japan's Speech At ASEAN-Related Meeting

JAPAN

Foreign Ministers from China (Wang Yi) and Russia (Sergey Lavrov) walked out when Japan's chief diplomat Yoshimasa Hayashi was about to start his speech at the ASEAN-related East Asia Summit in Cambodia, Kyodo reports citing diplomatic sources.

  • The walk-out was apparently motivated by Japan's criticism of China's military drills around Taiwan and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. China had earlier called off a scheduled meeting of its Foreign Minister with his Japanese counterpart and summoned the Japanese ambassador to lodge a formal complaint over G7 communique on the Taiwan crisis.
  • Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held talks with U.S. House Speaker Pelosi during the final leg of her East Asia tour. They held a joint press conference, pledging closer bilateral cooperation on regional peace and stability.
