China Travel Lags 2019 as Demand Uncertainty Drives Market Volatility

OIL

Chinese travel continues to struggle due to covid restrictions as oil demand uncertainty drives crude oil market volatility.

  • China air travel in September was below the 2017-2021 range at about 20m passengers a month compared to the five year average of 44m according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China.
  • OAG data shows the combined domestic and international seat capacity for North East Asia (including China) lags the equivalent 2019 period by 32%. The biggest difference is seen in international flights rather than domestic flights.
  • An aggregate measure of traffic congestion across 15 Chinese cities fell to 96 compared to the early 2021 baseline of 100 according to Bloomberg calculations.
