SECURITY

(MNI) London - Wires carrying comments from the Chinese Coast Guard regarding heightened tensions with the Philippines over territorial claims in the South China Sea. Confirmed that the Philippines airdropped supplies at the Sabina Shoal on 28 Aug. Says that 'adventurous actions' of the Philippine side are very likely to cause unforeseen incidents at sea and in the air.

  • Coast Guard urges the Philippine side to immediately withdraw the vessel, saying that the Phillipines 'gables' on the health and life safety of the officers and personnel on the vessel. Urges the Philippines to refrain from 'miscalculating' and 'escalating' the situation. Says that the Philippines carries out 'risky infringements' in the name of 'humanitarianism'.
  • The vessel the Chinese side is referring to is the BRP Teresa Magbanua, which has been constantly present in the Sabina Shoal for around four months in an effort to demonstrate Manila's claim over the maritime region.
  • The increasing tensions have garnered increased international media attention. Indeed, during US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan's meetings in Beijing this week, including today with President Xi Jinping, the subject of the South China Sea tensions with the Philippines has been raised, although with little progress noted.
  • Given the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty signed between the US and the Philippines, there is notable geopolitical focus on the prospect of Manila seeking to invoke the treaty depending on the maritime situation. The Philippines has also indicated its intentions tobolster its military with new jets and mid-range missile systems.
