Chinese FM Declines To Confirm Xi Meetings w/Putin Or Modi

Wires carrying reports that the Chinese Foreign Ministry has declined to comment on whether Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet with either Russian President Vladimir Putin or Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation leaders' summit this week.

  • As this is the first foreign trip for Xi since COVID, there is increased international focus on who he decides to hold in-person meetings with.
  • The SCO summits takes place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from 15-16 September.
  • While the foreign ministry has not confirmed any meeting, observer expectations are for Xi to use the SCO as a chance to meet with key regional leaders, meaning meetings with both Putin and Modi are seen as likely events.
