Chinese Special Envoy To Attend Jeddah Talks

SECURITY

China's Foreign Minister has confirmed that Special Envoy for Eurasian Affairs, Li Hui, will attend this weekend's Ukraine peace summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

  • Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, said in a statement: "China is wiling to work with the international community to continue to play a constructive role in promoting a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine."
  • In May, Li became the most senior Chinese official to visit Ukraine since the war began. Ahead of that trip, the Chinese MFA said Li's goal was an “...in-depth communications with different parties for a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis.”
  • Chinese attendance at the Jeddah summit is considered central to ambitions to produce a document outlining a credible plan for peace which draws upon plans presented by third parties.
  • A Chinese peace strategy released in February this year was widely criticised in the West for appearing validate Russian territorial claims.
  • Similarly, a Ukrainian plan presented by Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky at a G20 summit in November has been criticsed for seeking unrealistic concessions from Russia, rather than a more viable ceasefire agreement.
