CHP’s Kilicdaroglu Announced as the Joint Opposition’s Presidential Candidate

TURKEY
  • The opposition alliance has announced Republican People Party (CHP) Chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu as the joint presidential candidate to run against President Erdogan in the elections to be held on May 14, in-line with expectations. IYI (Good) Party leader Meral Aksener re-joined the “Table of Six” on March 6 on condition of Mayors Imamoglu and Yavas being executive vice presidents if the opposition parties gain power in the upcoming elections.
  • Kilicdaroglu has led the CHP party for the past 13 years. His opposition alliance promises to undo the executive presidential system introduced by Erdogan five years ago in favour of a stronger parliament, Bloomberg write, adding that they also promise a return to orthodox monetary policies and an “autonomous” central bank if elected.
  • Meanwhile, Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) sole focus during the election campaign will be on efforts to heal the wounds of the earthquake victims and build new houses for them, President Erdogan said yesterday.
  • “Additional budget is not on the government’s agenda,” the Treasury and Finance Ministry said in statement following media reports suggesting that the government was discussing an additional budget to manage costs after the February 6 earthquakes.
  • CHP’s parliamentary group will hold a speech at 1030 GMT/1330 local time. Cash budget balance data is on the docket this afternoon (1430 GMT/1730 local time).
