Civic Coalition's Tusk Says EU Funds Could Start Flowing To Poland In December

  • Civic Coalition's Donald Tusk declared that if he is tapped to become Prime Minister, Poland could start receiving frozen EU funds in December. Tusk spoke after returning from Brussels, where he met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. He noted that taking some initial steps to address rule-of-law concerns is a condition for unfreezing EU aid, which may start flowing even before legislative work on the required reforms is completed. Tusk added that he received no guarantees in Brussels, but he would take firms steps very quickly in order to secure access to EU aid as soon as possible.
  • The disappointing election result of the far-right Confederation may result in a split of its parliamentary caucus. Rzeczpospolita reports that Janusz Korwin-Mikke and Grzegorz Braun, some of the most prominent and controversial figures in the Confederation, are prepared to leave amid continued post-election blame game. Leaders of the far-right alliance will make an attempt to mend ties during a meeting this weekend.
  • Rzeczpospolita reports that budget deficit would around PLN77bn, more than the PLN34.7bn reported by the Finance Ministry, if we were to include spending financed by extra-budgetary funds.
