US DATA PREVIEW: Claims Seen 1.55M; Continuing Claims Improving
---------------------------------------------------------------
- Initial jobless claims filed through June 6 are expected to reach 1.55 million
Thursday (range 1.1m to 1.75m), slowing from the previous week's 1.88 million
level.
- Layoffs should remain elevated even as states reopen because most states are
adopting a "phased" approach, meaning the reopening process will likely be
gradual and businesses won't be able to operate at full capacity, analysts say.
- Continuing claims through May 30 should fall slightly to 20 million (range
18.5m to 21m). Analysts say continuing claims are likely past the peak and
should see more fast-paced improvement in the coming weeks as the latest May
jobs report indicates a stronger-than-expected pace of rehiring.
