CNB Begins Blackout Period, Another Constitutional Court Nominee Sparks Controversy

  • The CNB's media blackout started yesterday, with the Bank Board due to conclude its next meeting on Wednesday, September 27. No change to the two-week repo rate is expected, but the Bank Board may discuss strategies for easing monetary policy further down the line.
  • Another candidate to the Constitutional Court is provoking controversies. Several coalition MPs expressed reservations about President Petr Pavel's latest nominee Pavel Simon. Tomas Golan, head of the Senate's Constitutional and Legal Committee, said that he is unlikely to support Simon's candidacy.
  • President Pavel and his Slovak counterpart Zuzana Caputova sought to play down recent tensions between Poland and Ukraine, noting that the escalating spat is just a "misunderstanding".
  • CNB Deputy Governor Jan Frait will participate in a discussion on unconventional monetary policy on October 9. The debate will be moderated by Bank Board's Jan Kubicek.
