CNN-Hezbollah Could Attack Israel Independent Of Iranian Strike

MIDEAST

CNN reportedlate on 7 August that according to two of its sources, Lebanese Hezbollah could launch a retaliatory attack against Israel before Iran delivers its own strike. CNN: Hezbollah "...is moving faster than Iran in its planning and is looking to strike Israel in the coming days, one of the sources said. Iran, meanwhile, appears to still be working out how it plans to respond, multiple officials have told CNN. [...] given Lebanon’s proximity to Israel as its direct neighbor to the north, Hezbollah could act with little to no notice, the second source familiar with the intelligence said — which is not true of Iran."

  • Since the killings of Hezbollah's Fuad Shukr and Hamas' Ismail Haniyeh last week, the region has been in a state of heightened tensions amid expectations of an Iranian-directed retaliatory attack against Israel. There is little certainty as to when it could come or what it would look like.
  • Axios has reported that Israel has told the US that any Hezbollah attacks that harm civilians will mean the group paying 'a disproportionate price', intimating a major Israeli assault on Lebanese territory if damaging Hezbollah strikes occur.
  • Wires reporting comments from acting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani claiming that Israel is 'not in a position' to wage war against Iran. The length of time between Haniyeh's killing and the Iranian response has led to some speculationthat US-led diplomacy in defusing the situation could be paying dividends, lowering the prospect of an escalatory strike.
