Coalition Leaders Agree On 2024 Budget Deficit

  • Seznam Zpravy reports that the ruling coalition last night reached consensus over next year's budget deficit, which is expected to be CZK252bn. The Spolu alliance (ODS, KDU-CSL and TOP 09) were reportedly pushing for a deficit of CZK230bn, while the Pirates and STAN wanted CZK270bn. Seznam Zpravy describes the planned deficit as a victory for Prime Minister Petr Fiala's Cabinet amid its efforts to reduce fiscal shortfalls.
  • National Economic Council's Petr Zahradnik said that Czechia should launch large-scale public investments to boost growth, even if it would mean increasing debt.
  • Parliamentary budget and social policy committees will debate the government's fiscal consolidation package this morning. Elsewhere, the Cabinet will hold its weekly meeting.
