Coalition Talks Continue Amid Risks Of Gov't Collapse

Talks between the constituent parties in Poland's governing coalition continue today in an attempt to avoid a split that could lead to a collapse of the gov't and early elections.

  • The 'United Right' sits as the governing bloc in the Polish Sejm (parliament), and is an informal electoral alliance formed by the conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS) and two smaller parties, the hardline socially conservative United Poland and the centre-right Agreement party.
  • United Poland has threatened PiS with its withdrawal from gov't over an animal rights bill supported by PiS. If it carried through on this threat the gov't would lose its parliamentary majority.
  • Current opinion polling shows that there is no guarantee the United Right would be able to win a majority in parliament should a snap election take place.
