Coalition Talks Set To Start As Parties Of The Right Gain Majority

SWEDEN

Talks between the four parties of the cente-right/right are due to begin in earnest in Sweden following the resignation of Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson on Wednesday 14 September.

  • The parties of the right (Sweden Democrats, Moderates, Christian Democrats, Liberals) hold 176 seats in the Risksdag to the 174 held be the parties of the left (Social Democrats, Centre Party, Left Party, Greens) according to final results published on 14 September (another recount takes place in two weeks but this is seen as a formality).
  • Negotiations now get underway between the four rightist parties. Centre-right Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson is expected to lead the gov't, with the right-wing nationalist Sweden Democrats - despite holding more seats than the Moderates - supporting the gov't from outside in a confidence and supply agreement.
  • The centrist Liberals, with only 16 seats, notably keen to reduce the influence of the Sweden Democrats in gov't. Could take weeks or even months for a stable governing agreement to be reached.
