Free AccessMNI POLITICAL RISK - Biden Stares Down Wavering Democrats
- Today will be another critical day for President Biden if he is to maintain his grip on the Democratic Party presidential nomination. At 09:00 ET 14:00 BST, House Democrats will meet in person for the first time since the presidential debate. Senate Democrats will meet shortly after for their weekly lunch.
- Biden dug in yesterday with an aggressive early morning play to quell Democrat dissent, but key players remain who could nudge Biden towards the exit if today's meetings fail to deliver a show of support.
- 17:00 ET 22:00 BST: Biden will deliver a speech to open the NATO leaders’ summit. Wavering Democrats will be watching for an assured performance and if he eschews the teleprompter.
- 10:00 ET 15:00 BST: Fed Chair Jerome Powell and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will appear before Congressional committees to deliver testimony on the semi-annual monetary report to Congress and the international financial system respectively.
- The GOP adopted a new policy platform, broadly in line with former President Donald Trump’s agenda. The platform steps away from backing a national ban on abortion for the first time in 40 years, includes hardline immigration policy, and rules out cuts to Social Security and Medicare. The platform calls for “large tax cuts for workers,” formalises a commitment to Trump’s policy to scrap tax on tips, and omits any mention of the federal government debt or deficits.
- Poll of the Day: Vice President Kamala Harris is running ahead of Trump in a hypothetical 2024 match-up.
