Scholz On Gas Cap, LNG, EU-China Relations

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been speaking in Athens alongside Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis on a number of issues. On the continued debate over a cap on natural gas prices (Germany remains the main impediment) Scholz states that, "EU energy ministers still have much work to do, it is about avoiding speculative price spikes". Adds that he, "believes a solution will be found to speculative price spikes for gas" and that 'Solidarity' only solution to EU energy crisis.

  • Scholz states that LNG terminals in Germany will be able to supply European neighbours from 2023 onward.
  • On Chinese shipping firm Cosco's controversial investment in the port of Hamburg states that the investment, "Only involves one terminal and is a minority stake, its a good solution. Germany will remain in control of the port of Hamburg".
  • On China-EU relations: "Through diversification we must ensure that we are not one-sidedly dependent".
