Congress Leaders To Meet At White House To Discuss "Lame Duck" Congress

US

Jacqui Heinrich at Fox News has reported that the "Four Corners" of Congress; Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will meet at the White House this afternoon to discuss the lame duck session of Congress.

  • Heinrich: "Source familiar confirms Schumer, Pelosi, McCarthy, McConnell coming to WH for 10:30 [ET 15:30 GMT] meeting to discuss lame duck congress with POTUS."
  • The meeting comes as the Biden administration is reportedly preparing a last-resort, one-year stopgap government funding bill as time runs out to legislate a FY23 omnibus.
  • Punchbowl News reported this morning that the Office of Management and Budget has begun preparations to minimize disruptions to government services in the event of a full-year stopgap.
  • The White House will likely urge Congressional leadership to push appropriators to reach a topline spending agreement in order to begin drafting spending bills.
  • Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin warned that, “operating under a CR moves our budget backward, not forward, reducing [Pentagon] topline by at least [USD]$3 billion per month below the level President Biden requested.”
