Constitutional Court Leaves Three Parties Off Ballot
SOUTH AFRICA
- The Constitutional Court ruled that the South African Labour Party (SALP), Afrikan Alliance of Social Democrats (AASD) and African Congress for Transformation (ACT) will not be allowed to appear on the ballot in the upcoming elections. The three parties missed the deadline for registering their candidate lists, which they argued was due to a glitch in the Independent Electoral Commission's (IEC's) electronic system.
- BusinessDay reported that the IEC has already sent the ballot papers to the printers, with ex-President Jacob Zuma left as leader of the MK Party's list. It is unclear what will happen if the Constututional Court rules that Zuma is not eligible to run in the elections after hearing the IEC's application on Friday.
- South Africa has made an urgent appeal to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to order Israel to "immediately withdraw and cease its military offensive" in Rafah, arguing that it posed a risk "to the vert survival of Palestinians in Gaza."
