Consumer Confidence Lifts On Improved Job Security

  • Bloomberg Nanos consumer confidence reversed most of the prior week’s decline, rising 0.3pts to 52.6 in the week to Aug 11.
  • The details behind the improvement were mixed but continue to show labor market resilience as the perception of current period job security improved further with 52.3% seeing their job as secure from 51.7%, and 19.4% as somewhat secure from a prior 18.3%.
  • Elsewhere, six-month ahead real estate views bounced but there was a deterioration in backward-looking personal finances as well as forward-looking views on the Canadian economy.
  • Looking in trend terms, the recovery in consumer confidence has plateaued since May with the index at 52-53 vs the 55 to high 50s typically seen ahead of the pandemic.
