Cosatu Plans Strike This Week, SARB Officials To Speak Tonight

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Trade union federation Cosatu called a nationwide strike for Thursday to protest against socio-economic factors hurting workers, such as "load-shedding, cable theft, crime and corruption, wasteful expenditure and austerity cuts." Cosatu said that it will hold rallies in major cities and towns in all provinces. One of their messages is that "the working class can no longer afford to bear the burden of rising inflation, electricity tariff hikes and relentless and reckless increases in the repo rate."
  • EWN reported that Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen may provide the details of the "moonshot pact" between opposition parties as soon as today. This comes after the seven involved parties agreed to hold a national convention in August to discuss a possible alliance for the 2024 national and provincial elections. Smaller parties appeared determined to preserve their identity, with Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader noting that the DA should change its "Big Brother" attitude to make the project work.
  • SARB Governor Lesetja Kganyago and his deputies will speak at the SARB Forum tonight, discussing the inflation outlook and economic growth. Their comments are expected at 17:00BST/18:00SAST.
