Coverage Of Final Day Of Democratic National Convention Underway Shortly

US

C-Span coverage of the final day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois is set to get underway shortly. Livestream

  • Vice President Kamala Harris will take the stage later this evening to formally accept the Democratic Party presidential nomination and deliver a speech to close out the convention.
  • Yesterday, Harris’ VP nominee Governor Tim Walz (D-MN) delivered a speech which, like the Obamas on Tuesday, framed Harris as the challenger, rather than a legacy incumbent of the Biden administration.
  • Harris’ speech is expected to be relatively light on policy, but she may provide some clues on how she will build out her agenda over the coming weeks. In particular, on inflation and the economy, two areas where Trump retains an edge and her tentative policy proposals have been received sceptically by economists.
  • Harris will have to calibrate how hard to attack Trump. Biden’s campaign was often criticised for an overly pessimistic tone that framed the election around the negative consequences of a Trump presidency rather than the positive outcomes of a Biden presidency.
  • She must also balance a break from the unpopular legacies of the Biden administration – inflation, immigration, the economy – whilst embracing the more popular elements.
  • Harris is likely to focus on three points: Her story of being raised in a middle-class neighborhood; her optimistic vision for the future, contrasted with that of Trump and Project 2025; and her belief in the promise of America.
