Crude Stored On Water Drops Amid OPEC+ Cuts

The amount of oil being hauled or stored on ships at sea has fallen to a one-year low, highlighting how production cuts are tightening the market and hurting tanker earnings, Kpler and Vortexa data show.

  • Around 1.04bn barrels are currently sailing to buyers or waiting to find them, the lowest level in one year, Kpler data show. Vortexa put the volume of oil at sea at 1.14bn barrels as of 25 August, the lowest level in 11 months.
  • OPEC+ supply cuts have hurt oil tanker earnings because there are fewer cargoes to carry, pushing benchmark rates to the lowest since May. Vessel earnings have also been pressured by concerns about demand said Richard Matthews, head of research at shipbroker EA Gibson.
