DA Leader Denies That His Party Could Consider Coalition Talks With ANC

SOUTH AFRICA

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen said that "there have been no negotiations with the ANC" surrounding a potential coalition agreement after the 2024 elections as his party remains determined to unseat the incumbents. Eyewitness News reported that several party leaders believe that the DA could keep the door open for a possible grand coalition.

  • Steenhuisen was speaking at a national convention of the seven-party "moonshot pact," which aims to oust the African National Congress in next year's elections and keep the radical Economic Freedom Fighters out of the government.
  • TimesLive reports that during the two-day convention, opposition leaders are planning to discuss items including "an anti-ANC declaration, opening up the pact to a broad church and an approach to government."
  • The TimesLive piece suggests that parties such as ActionSA and FF+ are pushing for a joint declaration stipulating that all members would refrain from entering coalition with the ANC - a move which the DA and IFP are not entirely convinced to.
