Daily New COVID-19 Cases Double In A Day

SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa recorded 8,561 new COVID-19 cases on 1 December, almost double the 4,373 reported on 30 November. While the number of new cases remains much lower than those recorded in many nations with similar populations, speculation about the increased transmissibility of the Omicron variant combined with this doubling of cases in such a short period of time could be a cause for concern.

  • It should be noted, though, that the confirmation of the Omicron variant in South Africa may be resulting in increased testing among the population, which in turn returns more positive tests.
