U.S. employers added 261,000 jobs in October, above Wall Street expectations for a 200,000 gain, while the unemployment rate rebounded two-tenths to 3.7%, the Labor Department said Friday. The data should keep the Fed on track for further interest rate increases.

Employment in health care, professional and technical services and manufacturing led the gains. The leisure and hospitality sector added a smaller 35,000 jobs, compared to its monthly average of 78,000 this year.

Average hourly earnings sped up a tenth to 0.4% but the year-over-year pace continued to decelerate to 4.7% from its peak of 5.6% in March. The labor market is showing few signs of softening, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday.
