DC Court-Trump Not Immune From Prosecution In Federal 2020 Election Case

US

The District of Columbia circuit court has ruled that former president and frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination Donald Trump is not immune from charges in relation to the federal 2020 election case. The unanimous rulingstates that, "Any executive immunity that may have proteceted him while he served as President no longer protects him against this prosecution."

  • The ruling comes as yet another blow to Trump. While he holds a handsome lead in the primary race to become the Republican nominee, and is polling strongly against President Joe Biden in key swing states, it is his mounting legal challenges that could prove the largest obstacle to him winning a second term.
  • Trump previously claimed that the case brought against him for allegedly looking to illegally overturn the 2020 presidential election was illegitimate due to the acts coming under the umbrella of his duties as president.
  • It is expected that Trump will appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court, where conservatives hold a majority over liberals of 6-3, likely delaying any eventual trial further well beyond the initial (recently vacated) 4 March start date.
