Defence Min Confirms Change Of Military Leadership In Ukraine Offensive

RUSSIA

The Russian Defence Ministry has confirmed that Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerisamov, the most senior military member in Russia, has been made commander of the combined forces group of Russian troops in Ukraine. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu stated that the change is intended to increase the effectiveness of managing military operations in Ukraine.

  • With Gerasimov taking direct control of Russian troops the previous general in charge, Sergei Surovikin, as well as Army General Oleg Salyukov, and Colonel General Alexey Kim become Gerasimov's deputies.
  • Surovikin, seen as a close ally of the Wager Group head Yevgeny Prigozhin, was only appointed to the position on 8 October 2022. Shoigu and Prigozhin have a bitter history of disputes, with the latter accusing the former of being responsible for Russia's failed attempts so far to win the war.
