Defence Min: No Rifts In Gov't On Ukraine Support

ITALY

In an interviewwith Italian daily Corriere Della Sera, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has sought to reinforce the gov'ts commitment to supporting Ukraine. This follows the initial submission of a resolutionto parliament by a senior lawmaker from the right-wing populist League (the party Crosetto hails from) that sought to curtail Rome's support to Kyiv.

  • In the event, the League's group leader in the Senate Massimiliano Romeo was forced to backtrack and amend the resolution to remove references claiming that ""even Italian public opinion no longer fully supports the military aid that our country continues to send in support of the Ukrainian army..."..
  • Asked whether the resolution showed that the League was trying to differentiate itself from PM Giorgia Meloni's national conservative Brothers of Italy (FdI), Crosetto stated that "I don't see rifts in the majority, they are invented controversies".
  • Crosetto also stated that other nations could end up joining the high-profile tripartite Global Air Combat Programme (GCAP) involving Italy, the United Kingdom, and Japan that seeks to develop the next generation of fighter jets. Asked about potential Saudi and UAE interest in GCAP, Crosetto stated that "Many are interested in joining, but we won't open until the initial three-part structure is finalized. Then, with everyone's agreement, we can expand to other nations."
