Defence Minister Re-Commits to Montreux Convention

  • Dunya writes today that risks to the agricultural sector are building, with soaring energy prices and cost pressures prompting cooperatives to consider closing energy intensive elements of farming, meaning irrigation may not be possible. In response, agricultural business chambers have warned that food inflation could shoot higher if irrigation costs aren’t subsidized.
  • In a thinly veiled reference to Ukraine, Turkey have warned that they are under pressure to allow NATO warships to enter the Black Sea – running against the pledges made in the Montreux Convention. The Turkish defence minister said he doesn’t’ rule out that drifting mines appearing in the Black Sea may have been placed intentionally to prompt Turkey to allow NATO mine sweepers into the Black Sea.
  • CHP MP Ahmet Akin warned that the crisis facing Turkey is “deep” after figures showed that electricity and gas supplies were cut off for 4.5mln Turkish citizens last year, with the proportion of the population unable to meet their utility bills rising.
  • Milliyet reports that Turkey could fill the gap in their aircraft fleet with US F-16s should Congress approve such a sale. The purchases would be made across the next eight years.
  • Finance minister Nebati is due to be speaking in Mardin at 1pm local time (1100BST/0600ET)
