Defence Ministry Issues Report Highlighting 'New Era Of Crisis'

JAPAN

The Japanese Defence Ministry has issued is annual 'Defence of Japan' reportin which it states that, "The international community is facing its greatest trial since World War II, and we have entered a new era of crisis." the report highlights in particular the threats Tokyo perceives from China, Russia, and North Korea. It also summarizes the significantly increased spending plans for defence capabilities, outlining the planned leap in expenditure on the National Defense Strategy (NDS), from JPY17.2trn (USD123bn) for the period FY2019-23 to JPY43.5trn (USD312bn) in FY2023-27.

  • On China, the report claims that "China’s current external stance, military activities, and other activities have become a matter of serious concern for Japan and the international community, and present an unprecedented and the greatest strategic challenge."
  • The Chinese gov't has pushed back against the Japanese claims in the report, with MoFA spox Mao Ning stating that the white paper, "smears China's normal defense development, as well as China's air and naval military activities. It deliberately exaggerates the so-called China threat and creates regional tension,"
