Dem CA Rep Karen Bass Set To Run For LA Mayoralty

Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-CA) is set to run for the mayoralty of the City of Los Angeles, and is viewed as an early frontrunner for the position. Bass, one of the more prominent left-wing figures in the House Democratic caucus, is seeking to succeed incumbent Mayor Eric Garcetti, who is limited to two terms in office and cannot contest the November 2022 vote.

  • The LA mayoralty is the second most powerful city-level position in the United States, behind only the mayor of NYC.
  • Bass' withdrawal from Congress is unlikely to result in any severe headaches for the Democratic leadership. Her district (CA-37) is strongly Democratic and hasn't been represented by a Republican since 1993.
