Democrat Retirements Mounting Ahead of Midterms

US

Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) is the latest Democrat to announces his retirement.

  • In total 26 Congressional Democrats have retired their posts ahead of the 2022 midterms. The is the highest number of retirements since 1996 when Republicans gained control of the House for the first time since the 1960s.
  • Retirements ahead of midterms can often signpost poor performance at the ballot box and these retirements may be another indicator that the Democrats are heading for significant losses in November.
  • Midterms are considered by many a ‘referendum’ on the President’s performance and President Joe Biden is suffering from particularly low approval.
