RUSSIA: Dep FM-'Oreshnik' Missile 'Powerful Warning Signal' To Europe

RUSSIA

Speaking to reporters, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov has said that the firing of an Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro in November has "in itself became a powerful warning signal to all those overseas who have slightly lost their sense of reality, at least judging by their behavior, and to their clients in Europe who have completely lost their shores, that Russia is very serious,"

  • Ryabkov: "We will solve our tasks within the framework of the ['special military operation'], and the security interests of the Russian Federation will be ensured by all the means available in our arsenal [including Oreshnik]."
  • Asked about the potential deployment of Oreshnik missiles to Belarus, Ryabkov said that he could not comment on operational deployments, but that "there are no grounds for this." This is despite Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stating on 10 Dec that “Russians will supply us with missiles for free,” referring to the IRBM.
  • Any such deployment in Belarus would immediately raise concerns in European capitals, with the closer proximity to the NATO frontier reducing the timeframe between launch of the missile and impact. The London-based Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) think tank outlines both the threats posed, but also the downsides for Russia, of the use of such missiles.
