Dep PM Wissanu Warns Complaint Against Pita Could Potentially Lead To Voiding Of Elections

THAILAND

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam suggested that the comprehensive complaint against against Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat could result in the annulment of the recent general election but emphasised that he was not giving any recommendations on the matter.

  • The Bangkok Post reports that the outgoing government's "legal guru" said that the details of the complaint will matter for the outcome of the process. He noted that Pita could be disqualified from being an MP while still being eligible to serve as Prime Minister and vice versa. He could also be disqualified from both or there could be a new general election.
  • Move Forward and their presumptive coalition partners continue to exert pressure on the military-controlled Senate to greenlight Pita's PM bid. They have established a power transition team yesterday, with seven working committees to address key policy issues. Pita meets with the Thai Chamber of Commerce today and they will hold a press conference shortly.
  • Thai Enquirer estimated that the MFP-led coalition currently have "around 330 votes max," which is still short of the 376 needed to install a new government. The news outlet remings that Move Forward needs to "convince more senators and/or more MPs from Bhumjai Thai and the Democrat Party to vote for Pita" by the end of June.
