Divisive Night For GOP In Georgia Primaries

US

The primary elections that took place across the states of Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas did not deliver any major surprises, but nevertheless showed a divided Republican Party with candidates backed by former President Donald Trump prevailing in certain races, but falling short in others.

  • In the race for Georgia's Republican gubernatorial nomination, incumbent Brian Kemp comfortably defeated former US Senator for Georgia David Perdue by 73.7% to 21.8%. Meanwhile, in the race for the GOP Georgia Secretary of State nomination incumbent Brad Raffensperger beat Jody Hice with 52.3% of the vote to 33.4%. Trump had endorsed both Perdue and Hice, with Kemp and Raffensperger earning the wrath of Trump after they denied the then-president's demands for further recounts in the state in the 2020 presidential election.
  • In other races, however, Trump-backed candidates won through. Former American Football star Herschel Walker won the GOP nomination for the US Senate seat in Georgia, winning 68.2% of the vote. In Arkansas, former Trump White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders won the Republican nomination for the governorship winning 83.1% of the vote.
  • In the race for the GOP nomination for Alabama's US Senate seat currently held by the retiring Richard Shelby, former Alabama Congressman Mo Brooks and former Shelby CoS Katie Britt will go through to a run-off. Trump previously backed Brooks but withdrew his nomination after Brooks' campaign failed to gain traction.
