Donors Eye Haley As She Firms As Second Favourite In GOP Presidential Race

US

A new CNN poll has found that former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R) has overtaken Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) as second favourite for the Republican primary race in early-primary-state New Hampshire.

  • While Trump maintains a strong lead, according to CNN it is weaker in NH than nationally with only 42% of likely voters saying they will support him.
  • The CNN survey finds that 20% of voters would support Haley with DeSantis (9%) dropping below long-short anti-Trump candidate Chris Christie (14%).
  • Trump remains the strong favourite to take the GOP nomination but a year out from the presidential election, and with considerable uncertainty over Trump legal problems, Haley has become as increasingly attractive prospect for Republican donors.
  • FT reports that Haley, "drew big names to New York events on Tuesday," "including BlackRock chief executive Larry Fink," and "former Goldman Sachs president Gary Cohn." Additionally, "billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller, traditionally a big GOP donor, announced his support on Monday and New York-based donor Eric Levine said he would host a fundraiser for Haley in early December..."
  • A recent NYT/Siena College poll found Haley outperforming Trump and DeSantis in hypothetical 2024 battleground polling against President Biden.
