DPRK Test-Fires Another Alleged Ballistic Missile

NORTH KOREA

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says that North Korea has fired an unidentified projectile eastwards, while Japan Coast Guard says that the object may have been a ballistic missile.

  • If confirmed, the event would represent North Korea's fourth missile test this year. Its state media said on Saturday that the military conducted a successful firing drill the day before, using two tactical railway-borne missiles. Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un did not attend Friday's drill as it was held "at short notice."
  • The previous two drills involved weapons described by North Korea as "hypersonic missiles," allegedly capable of manoeuvring in flight and travelling at a speed multiple times greater than the speed of sound.
