Drone Attack Causes Explosion at Nevsky Mazut Refinery

A drone hit Russia’s Nevsky Mazut oil refinery near St Petersburg on Wednesday, causing an explosion at the refinery, the Moscow Times reported, citing local media.

  • A Russian missile system shot at the drone at around 4:20 AM local time, the news outlet Fontanka reported.
  • St Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov said there was no substantial damage to property, cited by the Moscow Times.
  • The RBC-Ukraine news outlet, citing an anonymous Ukrainian military intelligence source, reported that Ukraine’s military intelligence agency GUR was behind the drone strike.
  • Russia has been facing increasingly more energy infrastructure attacks from Ukraine. Plants at Ust-Luga and Tuapse have both been hit, while a drone was shot down near the refinery at Yaroslavl this month.
