Duda To Present Ukraine 'Peacekeeping Mission' To NATO Despite Pushback

POLAND

President Andrzej Duda has stated that he will present plans for a NATO 'peacekeeping mission' to Ukraine at today's leaders' summit despite significant pushbacks from major NATO members that the alliance can and will not become actively engaged in Ukraine given the risk of coming into direct conflict with Russian forces.

  • Duda said the idea would be discussed at the summit, but without more detail.
  • US President Joe Biden visits Warsaw on Thursday and Friday for talks with Duda. This is the second high-profile US visit to Poland in recent weeks, with VP Kamala Harris visiting previously.
  • While Biden's trip is an opportunity for the US to show its thanks to Poland for taking in a vast number of Ukrainian refugees, it is also likely to be used to try to moderate the Polish gov'ts rhetoric.
  • Poland has proved the most hawkish of NATO members, seeking to provide MiG-29 jets, air defence systems, and now a peacekeeping force to Ukraine. For the US, France, and Germany these plans carry too large a risk of escalation and have to be rowed back.
