E3 Says Iran And US Must Make Final Decision On JCPOA

SECURITY

A spokesperson for the E3, representatives of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, at the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action talks in Vienna has called on the United States and Iran to resolves outstanding issues and conclude a deal.

  • E3: "Today’s talks in Vienna do not mark a new round of negotiations. These are technical discussions about the Iranian reactions to the text that the High Representative put on the table for a final decision. The key outstanding issue lies between the US and Iran."
  • “The text is on the table. There will be no re-opening of negotiations. Iran must now decide to conclude the deal while this is still possible. The E3 have technical experts present for consultation. We urge Iran not to make unrealistic demands outside the scope of the JCPoA, including on IAEA safeguard issues."
  • EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell was instrumental in reviving the talks but delegations from the E3 are not represented at the current round of talks.
  • Ali Vaez Iran Project Director at the International Crisis Group: "It’s still a mistake for the E3 not to be there, help bridge the gaps, and push both sides towards an agreement. Is the JCPOA “a pillar of European security” or not?"
