Early Polling Remains Positive For Bolsonaro

BRAZIL

Early opinion poll ahead of next year's presidential election shows incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro leading other potential candidates, including former President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, ahead of the 2022 vote.

  • Exame/IDEIA poll: Jair Bolsonaro (ApB, right): 45% (-1), Lula da Silva (PT, centre-left): 20% (new), Ciro Gomes (PDT, centre-left): 14% (+2), Luciano Huck: 14% (new).+/- vs 2018 elections. Fieldwork: 29 Jan 2021. Sample size: 1,200
  • The polling is all hypothetical at present, with candidates yet to officially declare their candidacies.
  • Nevertheless, if Bolsonaro can maintain this level of support it bodes well for his re-election chances. While there is little prospect of him winning in the first round by gaining over 50% of the vote, he would only need to mop up a small section of those that did not vote for him to win a second term in office.
