EC Edges Closer To Election Certification, PPRP Floats Idea Of Coalition With Pheu Thai

THAILAND

Local media outlets reported overnight that the six-member Election Commission (EC) confirmed that constituency 330 MPs-elect are not facing any complaints, but is yet to certify them pending the outcome of a probe into another constituency 50 MPs-elect. The EC is expected to consider the results of the probe at a meeting next week, which is the earliest time when it could endorse the 380 constituency MPs-elect.

  • The Bangkok Post notes that the EC must certify MPs-elect in at least 95% (380) constituencies. As a reminder, Thailand uses a parallel electoral system, whereby 400 MPs are elected in single-seat districts and 100 MPs are elected by proportional representation. The EC also has to certify 95% (475) of all MPs-elect within 60 days of the election for the new parliament to be able to convene.
  • Civil society groups iLaw and We Watch were planning a rally in front of the EC headquarters today to call on the election watchdog to facilitate the endorsement of MPs-elect and pave the way for the formation of a new government. This call was echoed by representatives of Thai private sector, who believe that political uncertainty would have a detrimental effect on the local economy.
  • Ruling PPRP's Paisal Puechmongkol floated the idea of his boss, caretaker First Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, becoming the next Premier if election winner Move Forward Party (MFP) fails to form a government. Paisal said that in the current circumstances the MFP is unlikely to gather enough votes from the Senators, which would open the door to coalition talks between PPRP and Pheu Thai.
  • Note that Prawit is a political heavyweight and one of the leaders of the 2014 coup. He chaired the military committee that selected the incumbent Senators, all of whom endorsed coup leader Prayuth Chan-o-cha as Prime Minister in 2019. As things stand, the MFP needs a further 64 votes from MPs outside of its coalition or Senators to be able to form government.
