EC Says Vote Recounts Shouldn't Affect Certification Of Election Results

THAILAND

Election Commission (EC) Chairman Ittiporn Boonpracong said that the recounting of votes from 47 polling stations will not change the distribution of seats among political parties contesting the recent general election.

  • The EC ordered a recount of votes in some precincts due to discrepancies in reported numbers. The process is expected to be completed within 5 days starting on Sunday.
  • Ittiporn confirmed that the EC can only certify the election results after endorsing 95% of MPs. Under the existing charter, the body has 60 days to do this.
  • Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said that the recount won't affect the July 13 deadline for the certification of election results.
  • The MFP-led coalition is pushing for completing the election certification as soon as possible to allow for a smooth and timely budget transition.
