ECOWAS To Discuss Niger's Coup During Thursday's Emergency Summit

SECURITY

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will hold a special summit on Thursday after Niger's coup leaders defied the bloc's ultimatum to stand down or face a military intervention.

  • Niger's junta continues to consolidate its grip on power by filling the nation's senior political offices. The rebels last night nominated economist Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine to become Prime Minister, paving the way for government formation.
  • US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed hope that the situation could be resolved diplomatically as a senior US envoy held "extremely frank and at times quite difficult" in-person talks with Niger's military leaders.
  • Acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, who represented the US in talks with the junta, offered "a number of options" to end the crisis but "would not say that we were in any way taken up on that offer."
  • Any ECOWAS military intervention would be led by Nigeria, where domestic political dynamics complicate the decision-making process. Any foreign intervention must be authorised by the Senate, which is reportedly strongly opposed to such prospect.
