POWER: EIB Allocates €86mn to Support Ukraine’s Power Infrastructure

POWER

The EIB has committed €86mn to support Ukrenergo in building protective anti-drone shelters for critical power substations, as part of the Ukraine Energy Rescue Plan, it said.

  • The funding aims to enhance the resilience of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure amid ongoing military attacks.
  • Russia has destroyed around 9GW of Ukraine’s power generation capacity since the start of March.
  • These attacks have led to curtailments of its vital nuclear units.
  • Periodic blackouts have also occurred in some regions during situations of high demand to not overload the power network.
  • European TSOs have increased power export capacity to Ukraine and Moldova by 400MW to 2.1GW this winter to provide some relief.
  • Recently, Ukrainian thermal power plants were “severely damaged” amid a barrage of Russian missile attacks on 13 Dec, Ukraine’s DTEK said on the day.
  • However, the DTEK did not specify how many units were hit at the time.
